We Are a Small Business for Small Businesses

There are “Practice Area” descriptions on this website, but there may be something that isn’t made clear by the headings in the “Practice Area” drop-down menu: Burns, Cunningham & Mackey represents small businesses.  We are a small shop, six attorneys and a small support staff, so we understand first-hand the nature and difficulties of the small business world.

Disputes regularly arise in conducting business, in any type of business, and often those disputes are legal in nature. For example, businesses who hire vendors usually do so through a contract.  Contracts are legal documents that outline the dealings between the parties, and the details of those dealings.  The details are sometimes misunderstood, miscommunicated, or ignored. Often, when that happens, it is the smaller business that has less bargaining power under the contract, and therefore less power to negotiate a resolution that will be to their benefit. BCM attorneys routinely negotiate and litigate beneficial resolutions for small businesses, because skillful and effective legal representation puts businesses on even footing, despite their size.

Like most Mobilians, the attorneys at BCM are grateful for the benefits big businesses bring when they move into our community, but not when the cost of those benefits are born by small local businesses.  We help local businesses who have been taken advantage of by larger national and international corporations by assisting them through the negotiation, litigation and appeals processes in a cost-effective manner.  We are able to help them by giving them an even footing with their larger, more powerful counterparts because that’s what the law enables us to do:  create a level playing field where size isn’t the deciding factor.

Right and wrong are.
