Women Lawyers of the Mobile Bar Association

Justice Janie Shores, Tina Savas and Suzanne Martin

The local Women Lawyers organization recently held a networking fundraiser to benefit the Leading Edge Institute (LEI) in the Board Room of Regions Bank in the RSA tower, downtown.  Former Supreme Court Justice Janie Shores addressed a large crowd of local businesswomen with inspiring stories of her rise to the highest court in the state, as the first female to attain such a position.

Tina Savas, author of Women of True Grit, and founder of the Birmingham Business Journal, also spoke, and described her perspective on the gender diversity issues prevalent in Alabama.  A percentage of the sales of Ms. Savas’ book at the event went to benefit LEI, and two recent LEI graduates were in attendance to speak about the program and its effect on their lives.

Dr. Suzanne Martin, LEI Executive Director, also described the program and explained that its express goal is to provide guidance to college-age women on how to attain their personal and professional goals in such a manner as to also better the State of Alabama by remaining in the state to pursue a career.  President of the Women Lawyers, Lucy Tufts, is a graduate of LEI, and credits it with her decision to remain in Alabama to begin her legal practice.

The event was very well attended, and drew women from all industries, to include the medical, legal, financial, realty, psychotherapy, engineering and education services and professions.
